Course for absolute beginners
Now we teach Spanish the way I wish I had been taught.
My name is Mónica Fiestas and I am the director of the online Spanish academy Cultuñol.
Before becoming director, I was simply a Spanish teacher.
Over the years I have met Spanish students who speak very slowly because they are trying to think through Spanish grammar.
It is understandable… Did you know that “ser” and “estar” are the same verb in English (to be)?
The truth is this: everyone wants to speak Spanish. But when you start, you run into a lot of complications.
And I can tell you that when I started teaching Spanish I saw the three most typical problems English speakers have:
I had those problems myself when I started teaching, until I discovered that the problem was the method I was using.
Sounds familiar? I used to teach typical Spanish classes, with lots of grammar, using a textbook and not spending the whole class speaking.
And one of the big mistakes is this… if children don’t know what an adjective or a subject is when they start talking, why should you need to know it to speak Spanish?
It makes no sense.
Since I saw it was not very effective, I looked for other options until I found the TPRS method.
At Cultuñol we use a method called TPRS (Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling), which uses stories with a cultural element to help you learn the vocabulary you need to speak in 80 per cent of situations.
Most importantly: everyone learns faster. Even people who said they were not good at languages.
